Program evaluation
Simon says:
This is another of the great
Mania series of programs from Topologika.
And, like the others it is easy
to install and run. Students like the great graphics and the fun animations
which are an integral part of all the Mania programs. Here they help make
science fun.
Students who visit our student
support suite at lunchtimes can often be found working on one or other of
the Mania programs. What is really good is being able to play against other
students over either the school network or the wider internet. This they
love.
With ScienceMania KS2, children
may solve problems, expand their experimental skills, revise science topic
areas and work through a range of entertaining but very relevant and useful
puzzles.
Topologika have been producing
award winning software since the Eighties and are still going strong -
because their software is what teachers want and need. And it is also very
sensibly priced. Current prices can be found on the Topologika website but
in May 2005 they ranged from only £21.27 for the Home Edition to £224 for
an unlimited licence. Wonderful!
As with all of the Mania
series, very highly recommended.

Program Details
Topologika say:
In stunningly motivating
maze-worlds such as Star Fleet, Roller Ball, Mad Scientist and Scally's
Lab, pupils win points, clear obstacles and outwit other players by
correctly answering multiple-choice revision questions on four topics:
Scientific Enquiry, Life Processes & Living Things, Materials &
their Properties and Physical Processes.
With enough points to exit a
maze, they can tackle another or test their Science skills in one of six
puzzles: Feel the Force (forces and physics), Laser Lab (angles and
properties of light), Mixture Magic (separating mixtures), Living Pinball
(investigation and classification), Thingamajig (identifying equipment)
and Short Circuit (light bulbs and batteries).
Pupils' work is tracked, work
sheets can be printed, further question sets can be added to the
computer-generated ones and pupils can even compare their progress in
'High Scores' tables.
Easy-to-use 'Options' are at
hand to set difficulty levels by Curriculum Objective, points required to
exit mazes, puzzle availability, time limits and to choose whether the
software will help just one player revise or multi-players across a
network or via the Internet.
