The original book of the same name, on which this program is based, is by Steve Chinn and available from Egon Publishers - although Amazon.co.uk will supply it for you.

Program evaluation

I say:

This is an interactive CD rather than a game like much maths software. It guides the user through the five sections using speech as well as text.

As such it wouldn't really grab a disaffected student's attention, but one looking for effective ways to learn would find this CD full of ideas.

I feel that this is complementary to the book of the same name by Steve Chinn which might be worth buying first. In the school situation the program probably requires careful guidance from the teacher, although much depends on the student and the degree of stimulation they need to engage with a task.

For non-specialist teachers it would also be useful as a training programme for them.

Program Details

The blurb says:

"An interactive educational CD ROM aimed at people experiencing difficulties with the times tables, particularly dyslexic children. The CD includes a voice recording system. The user can chose any table, record it in their own voice and then replay it."

The program is split into five sections:

What are the times tables
Self-voice echo
Strategies
Review
Test

The strategies section presents ways of learning the 121 table facts by showing ways of breaking this task down into manageable "bite-sized" chunks, using the easier facts to work out the harder ones.

Self-voice echo allows the user to record their own voice speaking the visually presented times tables.

In the Review section the user can select a times table and see how to approach it in a non-threatening manner.

The test is just that, presenting a random selection of tables facts to be attempted against the clock.
