Program evaluation

Simon says:

I'm frequently impressed with Topologika's software and this is no exception. As with other Mania titles students work their way through a maze, answering questions as they go. Sounds simple but the graphics of the latest version are outstanding and I'm sure contribute to the popularity of the Mania series with my students.

Math Mania provides a fun context in which students practice numeracy skills - without being aware of it. It provides the kind of repetition and overlearning which helps embed maths skills.

Reactions from students on our raising achievement programme have been positive. They like collecting gold, finding the key and then escaping from the maze. The puzzles, which the students solve after escaping from the maze are particularly challenging. So, although there is a strong gaming element to this program, the maths (on four levels) is also sufficiently demanding.

How useful you find this program probably depends on your educational philosophy (pre- or post- Baker) and the situation you use it in. For disaffected and / or underachieving students where conventional teaching strategies have failed, then I rate this program highly. I've watched students who dislike working on anything more traditional that might improve their maths come into our base, sit down and quietly get on with Math Mania.

What really motivates our students is the facility to play against each other over our network (or with other schools over the internet): this is a really powerful motivator. I have to stop students using the program or they'd spend all day with it!

For fun but effective revision of already taught maths knowledge and skills with all students, Math Mania is highly recommended. The program comes in two versions: one for KS2 and the other for KS3.

Topologika say:

Do you need to get pupils practising not just the ‘four rules’ of number, but also Topic work and Problem-solving? Then you need MathMania.

By answering questions in up to six different mazes (Numeracy, Angles, Time, Measures, Shape/Space, Lucky Dip), pupils consolidate Number and/or Topic skills.

Between mazes they can win bonus points by tackling puzzles (Magic Squares, Towers of Hanoi, Fill It, Sliding Blocks, Coins), maybe moving up the high score table and meeting harder questions as they progress!
