Program evaluation Students in my raising achievement group will use this program without prompting. It is fun to use but requires careful thought to achieve success. The higher levels are particularly challenging, but the "Hint" facility really does make the program a real learning experience. This is a useful feature and can be seen as elementary scaffolding enabling students to work at a higher level than they might otherwise do.
The scoring system is neat. My students like being able to attain Einstein status. |
Program Details Math Brain Builder is one of a suite of three maths programs from Sheppard Software, the other two being Prime Time Math and Function Mania. Registration of the three is currently $14.95 so won't exactly break the bank and is excellent value for money. Problems start at a basic level, progressing through to more advanced four rules of number work where students have to consider which operation to choose to obtain the answer/s. If a student becomes stuck a hints button appears after a pre-set length of time so that they are not frustrated by being unable to make progress. Scoring is based on number correct, time-taken and level played. A high score table classes students into one of eight levels - from Novice to Einstein. There is also a Combat mode where two students can play against each other. Cost: $14.95 Shareware (but Sheppardsoft do all sorts of offers, so have a look at their site for the latest prices.)
