Program evaluation I say: From the 4Mation stable, this is an update of the previous Starspell program. And, like many other spelling programs, it now incorporates the UK's National Literacy Strategy wordlists which makes it easier to fit into a scheme of work. The program is very similar to the previous version, with the four core modules: Word Memory, Word Speed, Word Find and Word Splash. Word Memory uses the LOOK - COVER - WRITE - CHECK method. Progress is recorded and is also represented as a percentage. Incorrectly spelt words can be optionally automatically corrected. In Word Speed, a word from a selected word list appears for a pre-set time, you then respond by typing the word in. Again, progress is recorded and is also represented as a percentage. Once more, incorrectly spelt words can be optionally automatically corrected. The words from a selected word list are presented in a grid of letters in Word Find . The words are identified by dragging the mouse pointer along them. Words are presented either horizontally, vertically or diagonally, depending on the difficulty level selected. In Word Splash the aim is to prevent the person being dunked into a tub of cold water by selecting the correct letters of a given word from a selected word list. The program can be used without much preparation, but much would be lost if used this way. More effectively the teacher, or other adult, can create classes of students, with word lists and different options assigned to them. Much is customisable to suit a particular student's needs. A great bonus with the Superspell 2 program is that there are available, as part of the package, Diagnostic tests which can be administered to help find a student's current strengths and weaknesses. Records of students' progress are kept and are easy to view or print. Of course, there is also, the Superspell Assessment Disc, which (say 4Mation) "assists teachers to efficiently diagnose particular spelling weaknesses across a wide spectrum. Additionally, students can independently assess their own stage of spelling development." I have been using the assessment program for many years now and find it a marvellous, quick and easy way to find a student's strengths and weaknesses. Whilst the program provides data which is useful whatever spelling program is being used, it integrates most closely and easily with Superspell 2. This is another sound program from 4Mation which, with planned use, will enable students (school or older) to make spelling progress and increase their achievements. And Superspell is not expensive - a network version for your site is only double the cost of the single user version! Have a look in the panel to the right for more details. |
Program Details 4Mation say, SuperSpell 2 is based on the well established Look - Cover - Write - Check method. There are four activities to use and four extensive pre-programmed word resource banks to access. In total the word resource banks contain 6064 words and sentences. The word resource banks contain word lists for general spelling work for ages 6 to adult and National Literacy Strategy specific word lists for school years 3 to 6. Whatever your requirements are for a spelling list - SuperSpell 2 will provide the answer. Users can also create their own word lists and edit any SuperSpell 2 word list into a subset. SuperSpell 2 has been especially designed to appeal to a very wide age and ability range.
