Program evaluation Simon says: This appeared in 1995 (?) and is a magnificent multi-media eco-fantasy. The user helps Crinkle to save the Greenwood from Hawk Enterprises, which, with their team of clunkers are doing all they can to destroy the forest. The Adults' Guide to the fantasy explains that the forest represents a perfectly balanced environment in which people, plants and wildlife have established an equilibrium. Hawk Enterprises begin to destroy this balance when they begin to clear the forest for industrial development. The Guide notes, "most of the problems facing Crinkle and her friends are problems with which we are faced in the real world. The graphics, animation, sound and music are all of the highest standard and blend well together. The text is "designed to present average readers with a challenge" but all text can be heard as well as read. The fantasy is complex and demands a great deal of the student. I feel that more than any other program it is vital that the teacher or other adult has worked their way through before the student and is ready to give structure and guidance for those students who find this difficult. Having said this the program is another great piece of software from Mike Matson and the 4Mation team.

Program Details 4Mation say: Although set in a fantasy world, Guardians highlights many of the environmental threats that are encountered today: air and water pollution, destruction of habitats, soil erosion, the siting of blots on the landscape, the lowering of water tables and deforestation. The blend of pathos and humour plus the appealing nature of the program will fire children‘s imaginations. Hawk Enterprises is threatening the Greenwood and its inhabitants. Crinkle, the heroine of the story, sets out to save the forest from destruction. With the assistance of the forest folk and a little bit of magic she is able to save the environment. The reading level in Guardians of the Greenwood has been carefully controlled to give average readers a challenge. A talking dictionary assists with the challenging words. Strange and magical creatures emerge from the most unexpected places to help you. When you have everything in place you can save the Greenwood from destruction. Key Features
