Program evaluation
Simon says:
This
program is a favourite with many of the students who attend our after-school Homework Clubs. Yes, I know they should
be doing Homework and not enjoying themselves.
This
is a great adventure. The aim is simply (!) to hatch a dinosaur
egg using information from a dead professor's diary and that
gained as the they explore the adventure. The adventure has enough
structure to make sure that students don't give up because they
don't know what to do next - but is also open enough to allow
many different ways of collecting the information which is needed
to hatch a dinosaur egg. As a stimulus for reading and problem-solving
it is magnificent. (But don't take my word - watch my students
using it.)
I
created an on-line version of the Professor's Diary ( the paper
version of which accompanies this program). This contains much
necessary information for the students before they start. Usually
they dive straight in without reading it - but soon realise the
need for careful reading for information and begin to browse
either the on-line or paper version of the Diary.
Teachers'
Notes are included with a wealth of ideas for "English,
Maths, Science, Drama and Art." So, if you're fed up with the U.K.'s return to the
nineteenth century
in "education, education, education", then move into
the 21st century and get your kids reading for fun.
