| Which firm do (did) you work for? |
S.Martin's
College, Lancaster |
| What is (was) your job title and what do (did)
you do? |
Associate Tutor.
I am an advisor and assessor of trainee teachers on placements in Lancashire
secondary schools under the Graduate and Registered Teacher Programme (GRTP) |
| How long have you been mentoring? |
I started as a mentor with Mentorpoint in 2003, before that I was a mentor to
PGCE student teachers.
All in all I have been mentoring in one form or another for 15 years. |
| Qualities you think help to make a good mentor. |
The ability to listen (a complex skill that requires a lot of effort to do
well). A non-judgemental approach, patience, understanding and compassion. |
| What do you think you've got out of mentoring? |
The opportunity to continue to help young people find their way in life. |
| What's the hardest part of being a mentor? |
Finding the time to fit in the mentoring sessions - there are important
factors of which to be aware. |
| Do you think mentoring has been beneficial
to the students you've mentored? |
Undoubtedly. The initial outcomes are watching someone take more
responsibility for their lives.
Many of the outcomes take a long time to appear. Perhaps later in life the
mentee will remember someone who gave up their time to sit and help them work out where they were going and how they were going to get there. |
